Best Sci-Fi Movies on HBO Max Right Now (2026 Updated List)
The best sci-fi movies to stream on HBO Max in 2026 — as recommended by Global Cinephiles on Tribe Chat.
If Hulu is eclectic and Netflix is constantly changing, HBO Max might be the service to open when you want serious sci-fi pedigree.
Its current U.S. science-fiction library stretches from 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange to Dune: Part Two, Furiosa and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Here are the ones we'd watch first.
1. Dune: Part Two
Best for: Epic science fiction
Denis Villeneuve's second Dune movie takes everything the first film established and finally lets it explode.
Paul Atreides joins the Fremen, falls deeper into the politics and mythology of Arrakis and begins moving toward a future he isn't entirely sure he wants.
Huge landscapes, enormous sound and genuinely strange science-fiction world-building make this one of the defining sci-fi blockbusters of the decade.
Tribe verdict: Watch Dune first, then immediately put this on.
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
Best for: Essential sci-fi
A mysterious monolith. Human evolution. Deep-space exploration. HAL 9000.
Stanley Kubrick's 2001 has influenced so much science fiction that even people who have never watched it have probably watched something inspired by it.
It is slow, deliberate and more interested in questions than explanations.
Tribe verdict: Required viewing for serious sci-fi fans.
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Best for: Multiverse sci-fi
Miles Morales travels deeper into the Spider-Verse and discovers a sprawling society of Spider-People who don't exactly agree with his understanding of heroism.
The animation alone is worth watching. The ideas about destiny, identity and whether a hero should accept a predetermined story make it even better.
Tribe verdict: One of the rare sequels that gets bigger without getting worse.
4. Dune
Best for: World-building
Before Dune: Part Two, there is Arrakis.
The first film introduces Paul Atreides, the Fremen, spice, sandworms, competing houses and a political conflict spanning worlds.
It is essentially the first half of a giant story, so watch it when you're willing to commit.
Tribe verdict: Gorgeous, atmospheric and better as the start of a double feature.
5. Stalker
Best for: Philosophical sci-fi
A guide known as the Stalker leads two men into the mysterious Zone, where the normal rules of reality don't seem to apply.
If your idea of science fiction involves explosions every seven minutes, this probably isn't your movie.
If you want strange, meditative and deeply philosophical sci-fi, it absolutely might be.
Tribe verdict: The opposite of background viewing.
6. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Best for: Post-apocalyptic action
Before Furiosa became the warrior we met in Mad Max: Fury Road, she was a child stolen from the Green Place and dragged into the violent wasteland.
George Miller's world is part post-apocalypse, part mythology and part vehicular insanity.
Tribe verdict: Watch loudly.
7. Ready Player One
Best for: Virtual-reality sci-fi
In a bleak future, much of humanity escapes into the OASIS, an enormous virtual world where a hidden contest promises unimaginable wealth.
The result is a Spielberg blockbuster stuffed with games, movies, virtual reality and pop-culture references.
Tribe verdict: Pure popcorn sci-fi.
8. Solaris
Best for: Psychological space sci-fi
A psychologist travels to a remote space station where the crew has begun experiencing deeply personal and impossible phenomena.
Rather than treating space as an adventure playground, Solaris uses it to explore grief, memory and human consciousness.
Tribe verdict: Beautiful, strange and emotionally heavy.
9. A Clockwork Orange
Best for: Dystopian sci-fi
Stanley Kubrick imagines a near-future society struggling with violence, authoritarianism and the question of whether goodness still means anything when choice is removed.
It is deliberately provocative and definitely not for everyone.
Tribe verdict: Disturbing by design.
10. Godzilla
Best for: Classic monster sci-fi
Long before cinematic universes turned Godzilla into an action hero, the original film used a gigantic radioactive monster as a terrifying symbol of nuclear destruction.
It remains much darker than many people expect.
Tribe verdict: Essential monster cinema.
What Should You Watch?
